Liver Shunt

Liver shunts are a congenital (from time of birth) problem. During gestation the placenta delivers blood with food and oxygen from the mother through the umbilical vein. At birth the pressure within the circulatory system changes as respiration occurs and this shuts the shunt.  If reversed the liver is deprived of blood supply and will not develop properly. Without surgery to close the shunt the puppy will have problems and will usually die.

Symptoms are weakness, depression, poor appetite, frequent urination, vomiting and lack of interest in activities.

I had a tiny yorkie boy that I purchased from a breeder not knowing he had liver shunt until it was too late. He died when he was 7 months young.
